Who Are You Listening To?

Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

PROVERBS 30:5

I was sitting in an airport (surprising, I know), surrounded by a large crowd of other waiting people. I had taken a moment to put my book down, and in just a matter of minutes I heard people giving dozens of opinions on different topics. One lady was talking about Oprah’s newest fad diet; another was giving Suze Orman’s latest philosophy on the stock market; another was giving Tim Gunn’s fashion advice to her mother; yet another was talking about what Brangelina thought about the environment. I wondered how many of these people had any opinions of their own!

In our fast-paced world driven by media and technology, we have the opportunity to access literally hundreds, thousands, and perhaps tens of thousands of views on every imaginable issue. The real question is: Are we taking time to listen to what God thinks about these issues? It’s fine to hear what the media or social commentators have to say about world events, but are we also seeking out God’s views? On a more personal level, it’s okay to listen to what our friends or our parents have to say about the situations happening in our lives, but more importantly, what’s God saying to us about them?

I think sometimes we get lost in the storms of adversity because we haven’t stopped to listen to what God is speaking to our hearts, or to follow his directions about how to navigate them. Storm or no storm, it is critical that biblical truth is the overwhelming sound in our lives. This is why every day, I do something to connect myself with God — read a verse, listen to a teaching CD, listen to a podcast, or simply meditate on one of his promises. I want God’s truth to echo so loudly in my life that it drowns out any other contrary voice that could possibly distract or deter me.

MOMENT OF REFLECTION

What voices are you listening to?

As you follow God, is God’s voice the loudest and most important?
