They stood in silence, sheltered from the rain under a tree. He looked up at the clock in the church tower. It was ten o’clock.
“The hospital staff were very good.”
She nodded sympathetically.
Ray and his sister lived just twenty-five miles apart, but they spoke very little. He had nothing in common with his sister. Oil and water don’t mix.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
A flock of birds flew overhead. She looked at him in disbelief.
“I don’t think you fully comprehend what’s happening. This is only a short-term solution.”
They stood motionless, staring at each other. She leaned against him. Suddenly, she looked ten years older.
