HOW CAN I summarise my love for dogs? They are so much part of my life and family, and always have been, that it is impossible to think of an existence in which they were not there. I’ve known a wonderful procession of them, all with different merits and, if I’m honest, sometimes with different faults. But all faithful, loyal, and as devoted to me as I have always been to them.
I’m up early in the morning because of my work on the farm, and the first greeting I get for the day ahead is from the Vizslas in the kitchen, enthusiastic and energetic, thrilled to see me. Then it’s outside to let Peg and Pearl out, and another round of tail wagging and sheer delight at the prospect of what lies ahead.
They are workmates, companions, and the greatest friends anyone can have; unquestioning, non-judgmental, and asking for nothing more than food and a bed and as much love as their owner can give them.
I hope in this book I have given a glimpse into not just how much they mean to me, as an individual and as a farmer who relies on them, but how much dogs give, endlessly, to the whole human race. They are our greatest allies.
I, for one, appreciate everything they have brought to my life. I am grateful to you all, my wonderful dogs.
