The new wave/punk band Blondie made it big with 1978’s “Heart of Glass.” Lead singer Debbie Harry took some flak from punk rockers for doing a “disco song.” Harry didn’t care, and she refused to hold her tongue in interviews—making her an inspiration to aspiring rockers. Here’s a bit of what she’s had to say over the years.
Interviewer: “Do drugs make you happy?”
Harry: “Well, I think you’d have to be more specific about what drugs.”
“The only person I really believe in is me.”
“In music the only thing that changes is the technology.”
“How can one be a woman and not be a feminist?”
“I have a lot of regrets, but I’m not going to think of them.”
“I could be a housewife…! guess I’ve vacuumed a couple of times.”
“I’M A CULTURE VULTURE, AND I JUST WANT TO EXPERIENCE IT ALL.”
“Being hot never hurts.”
“The only place left for rock to go is toward more girl stars. There’s nothing left for men to do. There’s bound to be more male stars, but they can’t express anything new.”
