My radio went off, station 27, 36, and 41 respond to 1070 at St Charles Road and Sheller. “I have to go.” Linda said, “I am coming with you.” I parked where she could see and my car would not be in the way. It was a large fire in an old ware house and cabinet shop. The engineer for engine 27 had not responded so the Chief put me on it. I was pulling water from two hydrants and feeding engine 36. 36 was feeding ladder 27’s two deluge lines and two ground lines. I was about 100 feet from the fire. Linda came over to me said “They need help in the support and recuperation booth. Is it ok for me to help?” I said “Sure, but you may hear some words you have never heard before.” She chuckled and we kissed.
She was working at the booth when they ran out of supplies. The other ladies in booth did not have any money to buy supplies, so Linda said she would get supplies. Linda and one of the ladies went to the store. Everything the lady said they needed, Linda purchased ten times as many and paid for it. The lady was floored that Linda would spend that much money. Linda said, “Don’t worry about it, they need the supplies.” The other ladies said they would have enough supplies for six months, “But we don’t have any way to pay you back.” “Just consider it the new girl’s initiation dues and a donation from Wil and me,” she laughed.
When we got done it was nearly 2000 hours I told her I knew I smelled awful. She said “I think I smell just as bad, it gets so hot in that booth. There is no air in the booth. Before somebody else tells you, we bought a bunch of supplies for the booth.” I asked, “How much did we buy?” “About $350.00” she replied. “Well thank you for giving me credit for what you did.” “No, we did it, as far as I am concerned there is no longer me and you, it is us, ok?” “Alright, but I need a shower, can I stop at my place and take one?” “No, you can take one at my place in the pool house. Albert still needs to talk to you.” I replied, “Not ’til I get a shower.” “Sure.”
