This is a favourite breakfast treat for children, who love to make little rice balls and dip them into the sesame and peanut paste. You will need to start this recipe a day ahead.

3 cups glutinous rice

1 teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon sugar

100 g raw unsalted peanuts

Peanut and sesame dry paste

4 tablespoons roasted unsalted peanuts

3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

pinch of sugar

½ teaspoon salt

Soak the rice overnight in cold water.

Drain the rice and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear.

Sprinkle the rice with the salt and sugar and stir through the peanuts. Put the rice in a steamer lined with a muslin cloth and steam for 30 minutes.

Remove the lid from the steamer and check that the rice is cooked. It should be tender all the way through.

To prepare the peanut and sesame dry paste, pound the peanuts and sesame seeds to crumbs in a mortar. Stir through the sugar and salt.

Eat the sticky rice by making small balls of rice with your fingertips and dipping them into the peanuts and sesame seeds.

If you are not going to eat straight away, cover the rice with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
