James Cochrane was born in Edinburgh and educated there and at Cambridge. He joined Penguin Books as an editor in 1961 and has worked in publishing ever since. His own publications include The Penguin Book of American Short Stories, Rudyard Kipling: Selected Verse, The Great British Song Book (with Kingsley Amis), Stipple, Wink and Gusset and The Penguin Dictionary Game Dictionary.
