The Best Choices

image

There are many quality stock screeners out there that will give you an idea of what might work for your investment. There are clearly far too many available and it is impossible to list them all. In the list provided are some of the better choices that are simple and easy to use.

Note: While many stock screeners are free to use, some of them require payment to get access to some functions. In fact, sometimes it might be better for you to pay for the full version of a screener because some free versions are limited in functionality.

StockFetcher

StockFetcher is a screener that works with just about every filter you might need. It works with many filter phrases as you just enter in what you want to search for by entering details into the large data entry box.

Go to the New Filter section and type in what you want. If you type in “stocks with p/e above 15,” you will get information on all the stocks with a P/E of 15 or greater. The Filter Assist feature also helps you to find individual filters. This ensures that you will add the correct terms to the search, thus giving you a more accurate read-out.

The screener allows you see up to five stocks at a time. It costs extra to use the full version which provides unlimited search results. Considering how thousands of stocks might match up with the parameters you have indicated, it might be worthwhile for you to spend $8.95 per month to get access to the full version.

Finviz

Finviz works a little differently as it features a series of drop-down menus for when you need to add filters. There are three types of filters:

  1. Descriptive filters let you search for things based on the exchange, the market cap of a stock, dividend yields, the sector of a stock, and the target price.
  2. Fundamental filters let you review P/E, P/S and EPS growth totals among others.
  3. Technical filters cover performance and moving average totals.

Finviz works well for any trading strategy you wish. The free version will only give you delayed quotes and charts. On average, these are delayed by a few months. This is a huge problem for day-traders who need to find the right price immediately. Fortunately, the paid version of the program corrects this issue. It will cost $24.96 per month to get access to the Finviz Elite version. This gives you real-time quotes and maps. Added EPS and sales fundamental charts are included alongside intraday charts and technical studies. You won’t have to bear with any advertisements when using the paid version of the screener either.

ChartMill

ChartMill focuses mainly on patterns including squeeze plays, pocket pivots, pennants, and much more. Use the following steps:

  1. Enter the pattern you want to use.
  2. List specifics on how much value might go into that pattern. This includes the price of a stock or the difference between two and bottom prices within the pattern.
  3. Enter how much time should be in the pattern. You could work with a day, a week, or longer.
  4. Review the results that ChartMill lists. These include details on how well a pattern is laid out; a full long-term display shows how well a stock is performing.

ChartMill works with a series of credits. It costs a few hundred credits for you to run the screener. The cost might be higher if you work with an even more intricate or detailed screening process. You will receive 6,000 free credits each month. Any unused credits you have on your account will roll over into the next month so you could have more than 6,000 at a time depending on how you use ChartMill. You have the option of paying $10 for 10,000 credits. You can also pay $29.97 per month to have unlimited access to ChartMill with as many searches as you wish per month. You may also get a monthly discount if you pay for full-year access.

StockRover

StockRover is a program with fundamental and technical screening features. It works well with identifying momentum for individual stocks. This program also gives you information on how hedge funds are using stocks. You can use this to see which funds are buying and selling those stocks and how many shares are being acquired by individual funds at a time. This helps you to see if there is a specific group responsible for any significant changes in a stock’s value.

This is free to use, but the paid version gives you much more. You can use the paid version to get access to equations, data exporting tools, and alerts. The paid version lets you save individual stocks and specify certain types of triggers or alerts. This is all convenient, but it will cost $249.99 per year to get access to the full version.

These are all good choices for reviewing stocks, but you may want to look at many others. The choices you have are extensive and deserve to be analyzed to determine what makes them outstanding.
