David Hinton has translated many works of classical Chinese poetry, earning him wide acclaim for creating compelling contemporary poems that convey the actual texture and density of the originals. He is the first person in more than a century to translate the five seminal masterworks of Chinese philosophy: I Ching, Tao Te Ching, Chuang Tzu, Analects, and Mencius. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has won both major awards given for translation in the United States: the Landon Translation Award and the PEN Translation Award. Most recently, he was awarded the Thornton Wilder Prize for lifetime achievement from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. You can sign up for email updates here.
