The Twelve Dates of Christmas

“Hi, this is Lucy,” I say.

“Hi. My name is Josh, I—“

“So much better than Fun4U.”

There’s a tiny pause and I think maybe I’ve offended him. “Yeah. I guess.” He sounds puzzled.

Remembering what Steph said about weeding out the duds, I say, “So, tell me about yourself, Josh.”

“I—“ he takes a breath. “This is a little weird, talking to someone I’ve never met. Let’s see. I moved to Seattle a couple of months ago. I’m looking to meet people.”

I like the sound of his voice. It’s laid back. Mellow. “Uh, huh?”

“Um. I’m addicted to coffee and Dr. Who.”

“Really?” I can’t believe it. “Me too. Both those things.” I’m surprised. He sounds interesting.

“Then we should meet for coffee and discuss the best show ever. How about tomorrow?”

Enough weeding. Dr. Who? I can’t believe I’ve struck gold my first time out with the prospecting pan.

“Eleven?” I name a coffee shop I love that’s walking distance from my apartment. It’s not a chain, it’s one of those cool places with comfy chairs and shelves of books and home-made muffins. The coffee is amazing.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he says.

Incredibly, so am I.
