This text is a reprint of the 1906 Everyman edited by Ernest Rhys, and introduced by R. Brimley Johnson (based in turn on the 1861 edition of Lady Mary’s works). He did much to promote eighteenth-century letters, but had some Edwardian qualms about the frankness of their wit. In a few places this text is bowdlerized, though since this illustrates a different historical reading, it is of interest in itself. Most versions of Lady Mary’s letters modernize her spelling and make changes to her punctuation (especially adding commas and changing dashes into full stops). Readers who wish to experience their original flavour should consult the standard scholarly edition, The Complete Letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, edited by Robert Halsband (this also prints her letters to Algarotti and some correspondence to her).
