I couldn’t believe it. Last night had actually happened, and I’d woken in his arms just as I’d fallen asleep. It had been real. Even if it had been a dream, I’d have smiled and gone about my day with a grin, but now? I didn’t want to wake him. I wanted the moment to never end.
When he did stir, we went about the business of putting ourselves together. There was no awkwardness, no “morning after” regret. We laughed and joked, just as we had the night before. I admired his bedroom, now that I was finally getting a good look at it. We joked that last night I hadn’t seen much more than a wall and a whole lot of ceiling.
Then he walked me to the door, and called me a taxi. “I’d like to see you again, soon, if that works for you,” he said softly.
“Uh, yeah.” Me, trying to act casual, when all I wanted to do was squeal. “That works for me.” He gave me his card. I promised to text him my number as soon as I got home.
I stepped outside, taking a deep breath of brisk morning air. It was a whole new world out here today.
I found myself humming as I stepped into the cab. So that was why all my girlfriends thought sex was such a big deal! I’d never understood, previously. Dan had been having sex on me, not with me. Not like Chase.
The connection we’d felt last night! I’d never slept with a man I’d only just met—never had a one night stand. But it was funny, I still didn’t feel like I had. With Chase, by the time we’d got to bed, I’d known him forever. It was like we’d already been friends for years, though we’d only met earlier that evening. Kindred souls. I’d never really understood that term, either. Not until last night.
As I watched the New York skyline scroll past my window, I ruminated on how different last night could have been. It had started so... well, so normal. Dan drunk, me disappointed and everything as it should be. Then I’d met Chase. Right from the start he’d made me feel valuable. He’d encouraged me to sing; held me up when I said I couldn’t. And then dinner, and that growing sexual awareness—that he was somebody I could desire, even if I didn’t think it would ever be returned.
And then his house! Oh how that interest had been returned—with interest!
I exited the cab, sighing happily as I climbed the stairs of my walk-up apartment. I couldn’t wait to tell my girlfriends about what happened! Should I tell them? They’d never believe it.
I was two steps past the door when I noticed Dan, sitting on the sofa. He was in his underwear, eating a bowl of cereal as if nothing had ever actually happened—watching cartoons as if we had never actually broken up. “Hey babe!” he said brightly.
My heart leapt to my throat.
He scooped another spoonful of cereal into his mouth. “So a big night last night—I can’t remember half of it. Anything happen?”
