50:4 Joseph was likely considered unfit to approach Pharaoh because of his contact with the dead. He had to request the household of Pharaoh to intercede for him so he could keep his promise to Jacob. See 47:29–31.
50:5 Dug means prepared, made ready, or bought. See 47:30.
50:7–9 The impressive funeral procession demonstrated Egypt’s love for Joseph. The next time Israel leaves, it will not be with Egyptian honor.
50:10 A threshing floor was a flat surface near a village, ideal for a stopping place. Beyond the Jordan: Why the lamentation was held across the river is unknown. There was also no need to travel so far out of the way, unless a wide detour was mandatory because the Philistines presented a hostile force.
50:15–18 Joseph’s brothers were once again terrified of him. They sent messengers: Those who fear retribution first send influential friends to intercede, perhaps even sending gifts, before they themselves appear. The message in Jacob’s name seems fictitious, but we cannot be sure.
50:19–21 Joseph’s response reflects maturity and insight. To be able to perceive the hand of God in a prolonged period of unfair suffering requires innumerable choices to deny bitterness and to pray. God’s will was hence accomplished as the result of man’s reprehensible behavior. See notes on 40:15 and 45:8 for the development of Joseph’s attitude.
50:20 See section 6 of Truth-In-Action at the end of Gen.
50:23 Knees: See note on 30:3.
50:24 God will surely visit you: The attitude of the Egyptian court was obviously becoming more negative toward Joseph and his rapidly growing family. Already Joseph realized that a miraculous visitation would be necessary in order to leave Egypt for the Promised Land.
50:25, 26 Moses brought Joseph’s body out of Egypt (Ex. 13:19), yet Joshua did not bury him with the patriarchs at Hebron. Rather, Joseph was buried in the field Jacob had bought at Shechem (33:19; Josh. 24:32).
Gen. concludes on a somber note, yet with a restrained hope that looks down the years toward God’s deliverance.
