Who Am I?

So often our concept of our self is fixed. I am a woman, or I am a wife, or I am a sister and a stress reduction teacher. But what does that really mean? Everything changes including who we think we are and what defines us. Am I now a cancer patient? What does that mean? Who is Elana? Who do you think you are?

For this exercise, return to your breath, let the mind quiet, and simply ask yourself, “Who am I?”

As an answer comes to you ask again, “Who is that?”

You can do this with yourself or with another person, taking turns listening and witnessing what arises. Allow responses to come to you; take your time, and pause between responses.

Notice what happens in your body. Let yourself be open to any surprises that enter your awareness without judging what occurs or censoring any thoughts. Simply notice.

You can return to your breath anytime you need to steady your attention and be present to the moment as it is now.
