FREEDOM OF DEPRESSION

ROSS is an edgy musician who wears black and broods. His mother worries that his “look” sends people the wrong message and wishes he’d just dress like everyone else.

It doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with me. I’m not gay or on drugs or suicidal. I’m a musician. This is just a style. Other people do it. People aren’t going to “think things.” If people are that small minded, they can think whatever they want. Why should I care what they think? You worry too much about what people think of you. Who cares? Be an individual. Stand out. I feel like I live in Gaptown, where everyone wears the same things and does the same things—it’s boring. That’s the problem with this whole country! Sure, a melting pot sounds like good, and I like the idea that everyone gets along, but what really end up happening is everyone tries to be the same. I don’t want to be the same as everyone else, Mom. And part of that is wearing black or blue nail polish if I want. It’s very rock and roll, and I like it. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just something I like to do. No, I won’t take it off! Ever heard of freedom of expression, Mom? This is America, remember?
