POTHEAD

RELAX

MICHAEL’s mother catches him smoking pot and is really concerned.

Listen. People have been smoking pot for years, Mom. It really can’t be that bad. They even give it to people with cancer and stuff. Now why would they do that if it kills you? Mom, Mom, Mom, you’re not making sense. People die from, like, heroin and crack and stuff. The idea that pot is as bad as, say, heroin, is crazy. They are completely different. Think about it; think about it. Pot just makes you calm. When I smoke pot, I just want to relax. What’s dangerous about that? So it’s really not that bad. Let’s keep this in perspective.

Come on! I am not addicted. It’s not a problem. I can stop, it’s just that I don’t think it’s that bad. They give it to sick people, Mom! Think about it!

You cannot send me to rehab for pot. The people there will just laugh at me. There are people at those places with real problems. Come on! Think about it! This is too extreme! OK, what if I promise not to do it again? Mom, this is way out of proportion! The punishment does not fit the crime! Now I’m going to be “that kid who went to rehab” at school. This is insane! I can’t believe you’re overreacting like this.
