About the Author

Gustavo Ferrer, MD, is pulmonologist trained in Cuba and the United States, founder of the Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Chronic Cough Clinic, and president of Intensive Care Experts based in south Florida. An authority on respiratory ailments with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Ferrer grew up in a culture that effectively uses herbal teas and folk remedies for relief from various afflictions, and today his work encompasses both traditional and modern forms of medicine. Dr. Ferrer grew up in a remote, rural area of Cuba, where he learned compassionate care from his mother and grandmother. As director of Respiratory Research for the United Nations University in Venezuela, he witnessed how one of the oldest tribes in South America handled death and dying. In 2000, he came to the United States and retrained with a residency in Texas and a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He then joined the Cleveland Clinic Florida. He has delivered more than three hundred presentations at local, national, and international medical meetings and is currently involved in multiple research studies. In 2011, Dr. Ferrer was appointed to the prestigious National Steering Committee for the COPD Alliance. As part of this esteemed group, he attended a White House briefing to discuss the Affordable Care Act. He has since received several prestigious awards, including Best Doctors in the US by U.S. News & World Report, Most Compassionate Doctor, Patients’ Choice Award, and multiple teaching awards. Dr. Ferrer has been featured in USA Today and the Miami Herald and on NBC News, CNN en Español, and Radio Caracol in Miami. He has also been featured in many Latin American national newspapers. He is the author of Cough Cures: The Complete Guide to the Best Natural Remedies and Over-the-Counter Drugs for Acute and Chronic Coughs and Cura Tu Tos con los Remedios de Abuelita. Dr. Ferrer also created a series of continuing-education lectures and training materials that focus on dealing with end-stage diseases.
