A Devotional Moment

THE LORD IS CLOSE TO THE BROKENHEARTED AND SAVES THOSE WHO ARE CRUSHED IN SPIRIT. ~ PSALM 34:18

Every person experiences tragedy. It is a condition of the fallen world. Christians are not exempt from heartbreak and devastation. While we have God to lean upon, we are only human and we will question ourselves, our actions, and sometimes, we’ll even question God’s hand upon our lives. Everyone copes with grief in different ways, some close themselves off, some scream and cry, some take it out on others…and some turn to God.

In The Key to Christmas two devastated individuals meet, but their grief encompasses two entirely different scenarios. At first cold and distant because neither wants to accept the other into the abyss of pain, they fight against attraction. As they struggle with questions and their faith in God, they find a tentative, shared solace in what they are experiencing. But can it turn the tide of grief? God reaches out, and both grab that lifeline to hope and a future.

Have you ever been so brokenhearted that it felt as if you’d never be happy again? It’s during these most difficult times that it becomes hard to accept that God is both good and also allows the devastation to happen in this fallen world. The thing to keep in mind during these times is that those two things are true: God is good. Bad things happen. Humans have free will, and some humans choose to harm others. Accept within yourself the struggle between accepting God’s will and not understanding why He allows bad things to happen. There is nothing wrong with struggling, especially when one side of that struggle is to lean on God’s strength for all your needs—both physical and spiritual. Keep telling yourself that God is Good. He can and will mend broken hearts…in time.

LORD, WHEN I AM STRUGGLING, WHEN I AM DEVASTATED, WHEN I FEEL BETRAYED, FRIENDLESS AND HEARTBROKEN, PLEASE REACH INTO MY SOUL AND HELP ME TO FIND THE PEACE THAT YOU OFFER, AND THE JOY AND HOPE FOR MY FUTURE. IN JESUS’ NAME I PRAY, AMEN.
