* It is to be wondered how names were kept straight in the family. Repetition was rampant. Jesse, not Nellie, had a daughter Nellie; Fred, not Ulysses junior, was the father in 1881 of Ulysses 3rd, but Buck got even in 1893 by naming his second son after himself, so there was a fourth Ulysses. Fred’s daughter, born in 1876, was Julia Grant; Buck’s second daughter, born just before her grandfather died, was Julia Dent Grant. Things became hopeless in the next generation when a cousin. Helen Dent Wrenshall, called Nellie, married Chaffee Grant and (before she divorced him and married her sister-in-law Fannie Grant’s ex-husband) had a daughter who gave one of her sons the name Grant and another the name Dent. By then, things were back almost to Cain and Abel.
