This small national park includes a number of isolated mountain peaks such as Mount French (579 metres), Mount Edwards (632 metres), Mount Moon (784 metres) and Mount Greville (770 metres), the result of volcanic activity in the area some 22 million years ago. The vegetation on the mountains is mainly open eucalypt forest, with spotted gum, grey gum and stringybark. Low montane heath grows on exposed rock faces closer to the peaks and pockets of rainforest can be found in sheltered areas. Protected within the Mount French section is a small remnant of vegetation known as fassifern scrub, a mixture of brigalow and vine forest. Wildlife includes brushtail possums, the threatened brush-tailed rock-wallaby and reptiles such as the common bluetongue lizard and eastern bearded dragon. Birdwatchers might spot pale-headed rosellas and Australian brush-turkeys at Mount French, and brightly coloured finches at Mount Edwards.

With more than 300 climbs, Mount French is regarded as one of Queensland's best rock-climbing sites. There is also a number of walking trails. At Mount French, North Cliff Track (720 metres return, 15 minutes, easy) is wheelchair accessible and leads to a lookout over Fassifern Valley; and Mee-borrum Circuit (840-metre circuit, 25 minutes) passes through heathland to a lookout with panoramic views. The rough trails that lead to the peaks of Mount Edwards (3 hours climbing time, difficult) and Mount Greville (5 hours climbing time, difficult) are for self-reliant bushwalkers only. Mount Moon (5 hours climbing time, difficult), with its steep cliffs and huge mountain-splitting crevice, is for experienced, well-equipped bushwalkers only, and prior permission is required to cross the private property that surrounds this section of the park.
