The Inheritance

 

 

The story begins in 1860s Guernsey, when a young widow, Eugenie, starts working for the famous writer, Victor Hugo, as a copyist, forming a close friendship with him and his mistress, Juliette Drouet. She later remarries, and her house is passed down the generations until, in 2012, it is inherited by Tess, a young doctor living in Devon.

Tess, looking for a fresh start, decides to move back to Guernsey and live in the house bequeathed to her by her Great-Aunt. The house has not been touched for sixty years, and in the course of renovation, Tess discovers Eugenie’s journal and various items once belonging to Monsieur Hugo. The story of Eugenie’s friendship with the great man had been part of the family history, embellished over time, but Tess now uncovers the truth behind the rumours as she faces her own struggles.
