BILL CARTER

Bill Carter became my attorney in the winter of 1983. That was when the rumor that Jimmy Bowen was taking over MCA Nashville was circulating around town.

Bill secured me a job as the head of A&R (Artist and Repertoire) at MCA under Jimmy Bowen on March 12, 1984, which became one of the most life-changing moments in my career. Bill would help me keep that job later on, as rumors swirled that I might be “out” at MCA. A trip to New York City for a meeting with Al Teller, which was secretly set up by Bill, would resolve the crisis. I would go on to stay at MCA Nashville for twenty-five years.

Bill also arranged for me to produce my very first gold record on CBS Nashville for Rodney Crowell, who he was managing at the time. Rodney’s Diamonds & Dirt was my first big success as a record producer! Besides being my attorney, Bill has also represented many big-name artists, such as the Rolling Stones and David Bowie.

An interesting fact: Before becoming an entertainment attorney, Bill was a Secret Service agent for John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Bill played a very pivotal role in my life, for sure. Bill wrote a book called Get Carter—I did, and I’m grateful for it.

“It was truly an honor to have been an advocate for Tony Brown throughout his career.”
