Paul first came to my attention when he married Emmylou Harris. They were both working on Paul’s concept album, White Mansions, in Los Angeles, featuring Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, and Eric Clapton on guitar. Paul had also written hits for The Judds. Paul and I started working together when I signed Marty Stuart in 1989. They wrote the songs called “beat ballads” that would become Marty’s signature sound. Three gold albums later, their collaboration would take Marty’s career from established artist to superstar status.
When Paul walks into a room, he casts a very refined British sophistication, which cannot go unnoticed. He’s a gentle soul and loved by everyone he meets.
“Tony may not be as tall as me but I still look up to him.”
