COLIN: Injustice lurks in every list of acknowledgments: there’s no really practical way to distinguish between major donators of time or expertise and those who kindly dotted a few “i”s. But before we move to the main list, Chip and I must single out those who contributed mightily and steadily throughout the three years we worked on this edition.
Carl D. Brandt, as usual and from the earliest drafts, acted not only as our literary agent but also as a literary and backpacking critic. And…
CHIP: Along with her patience and good grace, Linda Baker tested gear and lent us her seasoned outdoor perspective. Fellow writer Mark Jenkins served as a guide to the jungles of commerce and also provided a sharp and friendly ear. Florence Shepard offered safe haven in Salt Lake City during the outdoor trade shows. Kitty Graham answered more than her share of questions and welcomed me to Seattle’s vibrant outdoor community. And Deb Donahue, environmental law scholar and wildlife biologist, has partnered me on both off-trail scrambles and daily walks—and in other ways as well: we were married July 15, 2000.
A further supporting cast (along with those named in the text) includes people who over the years advised in specific fields, readers who contributed ideas, owners and representatives of companies that make outdoor gear, and those who produced this book.
The list is long (as I know all too well, having rummaged my files to compile it under a looming deadline). But that simply reflects how much human effort and thought has gone into this book. If we missed someone, we’re sorry. We really appreciate the help.

THOSE WHO PRODUCED THE BOOK: Thanks to everybody at Alfred A. Knopf, who teamed up with the two of us (plus illustrators Vanna Prince and Hannah Hinchman) to ensure the best of all possible works. In particular we thank Ashbel Green, senior editor, who oversaw these semiorderly proceedings with patience and good humor. Jonathan Fasman, his assistant, braved blizzards of detail. Virginia Tan, art director, sorted out complex matters of illustration. Kathleen Fridella, production editor, worked out the hitches in usage between Britannic Fletcher and Americat Rawlins. Finally, we bow to Ruth Elwell, whose index adds the tail to this particular shaggy dog.
