Chapter Seven

  1.   In 1948, Thomas Dewey ran against Harry Truman for the presidency. Many experts picked Dewey to win, but he lost to Truman by an electoral vote tally of 303 to 189. Throughout his life, Thomas Dewey always denied taking bribes from Lucky Luciano.

  2.   More than 160,000 American, Canadian, and British troops went ashore during the invasion of Sicily, suffering 5,500 men killed and 14,000 wounded.

  3.   Luciano grossed more than $12 million in 1925, with a net of $4 million. This is $57 million in modern currency.

  4.   First built in 1845, the maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility is still in operation. Notable inmates include the rapper Tupac Shakur. The Clinton facility most recently made headlines in 2015, when convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped and led police on a widespread manhunt that resulted in the shooting death of Matt.

  5.   “Later on, I made a check about that ninety grand,” Luciano would later write about the bribe to Dewey that freed him from prison. “It never showed on none of our books for tax returns, naturally; but it never showed up on any of Dewey’s campaign returns either.” As stated, Thomas Dewey denied any impropriety.
