Chapter Fourteen

Melody squeezed her eyes shut, completely unbelieving of the last few hours of her life. She’d never been a fan of adventure movies before. No point in watching them now. She’d lived one and had the scars to prove it. She had the dude too.

She dropped her head on Pierce’s shoulder as he spoke softly with the Mexican federal authorities on his cell phone.

Opening her eyes didn’t end the movie of her life. She was on the cushiest sofa on Earth with a glass of champagne in hand, waiting for their flight to take off. This whole time, she’d thought flying first class meant more wiggle room. Instead, she was in something classier, roomier and all-around better than her entire apartment. This was like the freaking captain’s quarters on Star Trek, complete with personal widescreen television.

She shouldn’t be here. No money. No passport. No name. Yet he’d managed to do the impossible once again.

She flipped channels on the TV until she saw a smiling friar appear. He stood in front of a monastery that she’d only seen from a distance. Numbers with a lot of zeros crossed the screen. She looked back at a winking Pierce.

He covered his cell’s microphone with his thumb and rotated the ice pack on his knee. “Told you I’d make good on it. Do you need me to translate or...”

“Cocky again.”

He nodded and went back to his call. They’d both come here to find something missing and instead found each other. In a weird and crazy way, her search for truth and justice led her into the arms of a noble thief.

She meant to stay in those arms. Everything about him left her wanting to know more. What sort of organization created a man like this – one who knew art as well as he knew combat? He was a modern day knight, legitimately saving damsels in distress.

Pierce ended the call and knuckled her chin. “What are you smiling about?”

She answered with a kiss. “Thank you for getting my phone back.”

He took his time pulling away, trapping her bottom lip between his teeth with a low growl. “I did a few other things for you too. Will I get kisses for all of those?”

“Sí. I was going to make you wait for them but...” She shrugged and drew him close. “To hell with it. Kiss me now.”

And for the rest of the flight, he did just that.
