For the purposes of this book, the southern African landscape has been divided into six broad regions according to dominant vegetation and climate. A selection of representative aloe species is discussed for each region, providing the reader with an indication of typical habitat and natural growing conditions for the different species.

The six regions are: desert and semi-desert, fynbos (Cape shrublands), thicket, forest (temperate, tropical and subtropical), grassland (temperate, tropical and subtropical) and savanna (bushveld). A seventh category discusses non-discriminating aloe species that grow naturally across a number of regions.
