Chapter Forty-Five

Lucy taped a hand-lettered sign over the logo on her mom’s shop door that read,

“Closed for Honeymoon!

Sunshine or Bust!”

Below that she taped a picture of the wedding party. In the photo, Tom had some recovery to go. His stitches were out but the fresh scars remained a vivid, angry red. He sported his first mohawk because most of his hair was melted off on the left. Bleached hair tips made the stubbly top shimmer like a crest on a proud bird. Lucy stared open-mouthed at Tom’s haircut and mimed astonishment. James smiled wide and held a large silver cross between his teeth. Tom smiled down at Marie from behind, and she gazed up at him. His scarred hands interlaced with hers across her belly, and her diamond ring dazzled in the sun.
