Preparing for dinner with the Fitzgerald’s this evening had Mia stressed and frustrated. She agreed so there was no turning back now. Daniel offered to pick her up but she chose to drive herself so she could leave whenever she began to feel uncomfortable.
Entering the home, Mrs. Fitzgerald welcomed her with open arms. That was a first.
What is she up to? Mia wondered.
As the four of them gathered at the dinner table, Mrs. Fitzgerald had never looked so happy, especially not happy to see Mia. Although her cell phone kept going off during dinner, she was pleasant and talkative which made Mia very uncomfortable. Why the sudden change in her demeanor? Is she switching up her tactics since being rude and obnoxious wasn’t working? Change in her scheme to break up the engagement perhaps? Whatever Mrs. Fitzgerald was selling; Mia wasn’t buying any of it.
Mia was the one this time that didn’t touch her meal. She didn’t trust her soon to be mother- in-law’s new found love for her.
“Is everything okay dear? You haven’t touched your meal.” Mrs. Fitzgerald asked with such a loving tone of voice. Far different from the way she previously talked to Mia.
“Yes ma’am. I am sorry I am not eating, I guess I am just stressed about the wedding.”
“I can certainly understand. Maybe I can be of assistance to you? I would love to help out if you would allow it?”
What is wrong with this woman?
Before Mia could respond, Daniel interjected to tell his parents about the change in wedding plans, however, his mother didn’t hear a thing he said because she was now focused on whatever was going on with her cell phone.
“I’m sorry son, you were saying?” She said now that she had returned her attention back to the conversation.
Instead of Daniel repeating what he had just said, Mia decided to fill her in on the details and again her phone went off taking her attention away. For every message that she received, Daniel checked his phone. The two shared the same ring tone and text message indicator but it was unlike Mrs. Fitzgerald to receive messages like this.
They finally had her undivided attention right before she excused herself from the table to run an errand.
“During the middle of dinner?” Mr. Fitzgerald asked as Mia and Daniel looked on.
Yep, she’s up to something, good thing I drove myself.
“Just finish up, I will be back before you know it.” She provided no more detail to her sudden departure.
Daniel, Mia and Mr. Fitzgerald were still sitting at the table when she returned twenty minutes later looking even more excited.
“What was that about?” Daniel asked.
“You will see,” she said as she smiled and started talking about the wedding as if she were the one getting married. “Speaking of the wedding, Mia, how would you feel about signing a prenuptial agreement?”
This heifer.
Daniel dropped his head in embarrassment.
“Grace, that’s not your business,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.
“It’s okay. I don’t mind the question and I don’t mind signing the agreement.” Mia knew exactly what she was doing.
“Great because I called Kimberly and she agreed to draw up the contract. She would like to meet with you sometime this week DJ.” Mrs. Fitzgerald continued as she watched for Mia’s response. Mrs. Fitzgerald thought she was a master of reading body language and facial expressions. She had a sneaking suspicion that Mia wasn’t as comfortable with the idea of a pre-nup as she was pretending to be.
“Kimberly?” Mia asked.
“Kimberly Duncan, she’s one of our attorneys.”
Mia suddenly felt sick to her stomach. She knew Kimberly Duncan very well.
