AVOIDING HARM AND DOING GOOD

At the same time that the social sciences are filled with opportunities to offer assistance to others, they are strung with ethical land mines. Therefore, those conducting research within the social sciences and especially criminology and criminal justice must be alert to both.

Chapter 16 deals with many of the thorny issues surrounding the ethical treatment of subjects. It also presents important information about plagiarism and fraud in scientific research.

In chapter 17, attention turns to research surrounding specific efforts undertaken to help alleviate social, health, and personal problems in contemporary societies. The design and interpretation of these so-called evaluation research projects is discussed.
