How This Book Is Organized

Chapter 1, "What Is This YouTube of Which You Speak?," includes a history of YouTube, explaining how it came into being and why it found such an eager following. Michael explains the joys and problems of the "level playing field" that is YouTube. Alan gives information on how to navigate YouTube and what it means to go viral.

In Chapter 2, "Storytelling and Directing," and Chapter 3, "99-Cent Film School: Shooting, Editing, and Rendering," Michael tells you about making quality videos that people will watch and pass on to friends. Alan shows you how to edit and render the videos, so you can upload them to YouTube.

Chapter 4, "Creating Your Very Own Channel," is where Alan walks you step-by-step through the process of registering your channel, and "pimping your profile," so that your spot on YouTube will stand out from the crowd.

In Chapter 5, "Broadcasting Yourself: User Generated Content," Alan walks you through putting your well-constructed videos out there for the rest of the world to see. He also provides insight into the more common "daily use" aspects of YouTube, such as creating relevant thumbnails, favoriting, creating a playlist, flagging, and more.

In Chapter 6, "Rebroadcasting Commercial Content," Michael guides you through the tricky landscape of using other people's work in your videos. You'll learn about copyrights, fair use and parody, public domain, Creative Commons and lots more.

Chapter 7, "Building Your Audience," is where Alan tells you all you'll need to know about growing in popularity, making friends, and becoming well known in the higher social stratosphere of YouTube.

In Chapter 8, "The Community: Where Do You Fit In?" Alan talks about his experiences making collaboration videos, networking, collaboration channels, and some of his own collaborations, including fiveawesomeguys, a top group on YouTube.

In Chapter 9, "Hacking the System: How to Cheat (and Why You Shouldn't)," Alan shares what he's learned about nefarious dealings on YouTube—what's considered acceptable behavior and what can get you kicked out for good (and how to get back on if you're kicked off). Michael gives a fascinating history of hacking in general.

Chapter 10, "Reaching the World," is where Alan tells you all about the social networking world of YouTube, blogging, vlogging, signatures, social bookmarking, and just generally becoming a pro at making friends.

In Chapter 11, "Money Money Money!" Alan tells you about the Partner Program on YouTube, how to apply, and how to finally monetize your work.

Chapter 12 is called "Beyond the "Tube," and here you'll learn from Alan and Michael how to create your own identity, independent of YouTube. We also include Michael's tricks of time budgeting to still have a life away from the computer.

Chapter 13, "Becoming a Success Story," is about becoming a star in your own right, getting featured, not just on YouTube's front page, but on the nightly news, turning up first in Google searches, and generally becoming well known.

In Chapter 14, "Closing Arguments," Michael philosophizes about what it means to be a true Renaissance artist in the Web 2.0 realm and shares real gems of wisdom.

Chapter 15, "Interviews With Other YouTube Rock Stars," finds Alan interviewing some of the huge stars of YouTube.
