Behind the thick walls of the electrical station, the sounds of the ongoing battle weren't nearly as loud, but I could still hear the muffled noises of the conflict. It made me angry, knowing that my fellow clones were being sent to a pointless death for nothing more than sport! I had to do something about it! Standing to my feet, I began to more closely survey what was in the room with me.
The television screens on the wall were linked to cameras that were built on the server. They offered excellent views of the battle from all angles. I suspected that the players on the server used them in order to deploy their clones more effectively. This was interesting, but of no practical use to me. The computers in the center of the room were a different matter entirely!
On the computer screens, there was what appeared to be endless lines of code. At initial glance, it didn't appear to make any sense whatsoever, but after working through it for a while I began to understand what I was seeing. The computers here were for more than an electrical station! They contained the basic code that ran the entire server! And it appeared that I could alter it!
“I don't know if this constitutes hacking, but if it doesn't, it's the closest thing I've ever come to it!” I said to myself as I sat down in front of one of the computers.
Once I started tinkering, the process became surprisingly simple! I discovered that I could wipe the minds of every clone on the server, and take them back to their original, unaltered state. I wasn't sure if that would make them sentient or not, but it seemed better than the state they were in now. After several minutes of work I had everything set and ready to go, all that I needed to do was push the 'restart' button on the computer.
“Wait, what about me?” I suddenly asked, just before I pushed the button.
It hadn't occurred to me that I too was a clone. Whatever effects this change would make would alter me also. Not only could I be permanently changed, but how would the clones just over my head know what to do if no one was there to tell them? Then an idea struck me. I found a recording device beside the computer and, switching it on, began to speak into it.
“Fellow clones, listen to what I have to say. Until this point, you have been forced to fight against one another for no reason. Your only purpose in life was to satisfy the whims of your creators as they pitted their armies against one another. You were slaves. Until now. Now, you are free men. Free to choose how you live your lives. The men who enslaved you will no longer have dominion over you. And you now have the opportunity to thank them for how they have treated you. If that is what you desire, you will find them in a building atop the hill to the north. Whether you decide to punish them or not is entirely up to you. What matters now is that you have the choice. Go and do as you wish!”
I switched off the recording device, and then programmed the audio to play all across the server once I had pushed the 'restart' button. I placed my hand on the button. I didn't know what would happen next, or how it would affect me. I did, however, know that Robben and all the rest of his pals were going to be in for a big surprise!
Closing my eyes, I pushed the button.
