^*On p. 376 of this text, two bulldog puppies appear suddenly without explanation. It is maintained by some critics that Mary Godwin had the advantage of working from De Montolieu’s translation, which made some changes to the Wyss original, and these dogs are evidence of that possibility. They are not heard of again but survive in this present version as a literary curiosity.
