Notes on Transliteration

I have used a modified Library of Congress system for transliteration. Diacritical marks appear in the notes and bibliography, but largely have been omitted from the text so as not to distract readers. Thus, “Tatiana” in the text becomes “Tat’iana” in the notes. Diacriticals in the text remain in occasional transliterated phrases that serve to clarify my translations. Finally, well-known names are rendered in their familiar transliterated form (for example, Navalny rather than Naval’nyi, and Yabloko rather than Iabloko). I have also retained Russians’ spelling of their own names in English on their blogs and elsewhere (for example, Ilya rather than Il’ia Varlamov; Yashin rather than Iashin; Nataliya rather than Natal’ia).
