We ask a lot of this space beyond parking the car. Just think: gardening gear, lawnmowers and weeders, sporting goods and lawn games, recycling bins, and more. Here’s a plan to get this hardworking space in order.
make the most of wall Space
Achieving garage nirvana is all about keeping as many things off the floor as possible (lawnmowers being an exception). To help you do this, you’ll want to stock up on hooks of all shapes, sizes, and strengths (e.g., loads).
There’s a screw-hook for every type of item; rubber-coated utility hooks like the ones shown at right protect surfaces from scratches. A sideways hook can accommodate certain items, such as a dustpan.
Use two-pronged hooks for heavier items like outdoor furniture, large shovels and rakes, ladders, lawn feeders, and motorized edgers, as well as for smaller items (such as bike pumps) that can’t be hung on a single hook.
Garden hoses can be mounted on special hose (or ladder) hooks, which come in a variety of finishes and styles; be sure to buy one that is deep enough to fit your particular hose length. The one shown below also holds a broom.
Bungee cords help restrain heavy, awkward items that can’t stand up straight on their own (such as a wheelbarrow). Strap each end of the cord to a hook in the wall.
Pegboard is tailor-made for utilitarian spaces like this, too; mount hook brackets to hold adjustable shelving, and use S hooks to hang small tools, bins, and baskets.

Separating the space into zones—gardening, recycling, sports gear, etc.—will help keep it orderly.
Organize containers by type, whether for hardware, paint supplies, or gardening tools.
Keep recycling and garbage bins in an easy-to-access spot.
Mount a drop-down shelf on a hinged bracket for a garden and compost station.
If you are storing boxes, invest in a sturdy shelving unit to protect them from moisture and temperature fluctuations.
A tall freestanding cabinet can hold extra pantry items and cleaning supplies, or seasonal gear such as ski boots or beach towels.
Include a wall-mounted clipboard with a notepad for reminders about lawn care (watering, fertilizing, and planting) as well as car maintenance.
