Rather than covering an entire wall, use paint (and the same techniques on the previous pages) to define a small space, frame a room, or provide a small but striking pop of color.

Painting the trim a darker color than the walls frames the room in a wonderful way, as demonstrated by this living room-slash-library. The edges of the shelves and the adjacent doorframe and molding are painted peacock blue, the walls a light gray, the palette inspired by the colors in the area rug.

Liven things up by painting a nondescript space a gleaming sunny yellow, or other vibrant hue of your choosing. You’ll need to apply several coats of high-gloss paint—preferably with a brush and not a roller to keep it from looking too candy-coated (any visible brush strokes are all the better).
