I actually (and perhaps not surprisingly) love to do the laundry—and I hope that after reading this chapter, you will, too.
Over the years, I have discovered the very best ways to wash and care for all types of things, from lingerie and fine linens to wool sweaters and scarves. Having a good washing machine and dryer in your home helps, as does a designated area in which to iron or steam.
I have learned (sometimes the hard way) to obey the rules covered in this chapter, being sure to always avoid mixing colors and putting too many items in the machine.
Also, because I like to have fresh white towels in most of the bathrooms and white dish towels in the kitchen, I have searched for the best detergents to keep them as bright and clean as possible—and insist on avoiding added scents and fabric softeners.
To dry my clothes, I use wooden drying racks in the laundry room, and have one large, flat surface covered in thick, padded muslin for blocking and flat-drying sweaters and scarves. Weather permitting, I dry sheets and tablecloths on my outdoor clothesline.
When you pay attention to how you do the laundry, your clothing and bedding will feel better, look better, and last longer. Read on for laundering guidelines, an effective stain removal chart, the proper way to iron, and mending techniques.
