How TO
KNIT A BLANKET

Rather than stitching one big blanket, follow this method to make one out of multiple mix-and-match pieces. Use a contrasting-colored yarn to crochet them together, as shown below.

Supplies

how-to

Adapt this process to make a smaller throw or baby blanket, or a generous-size shawl.

  1. 1. See pageĀ 380 for the diagram and measurements. For the 10-inch-wide pieces, using bulky yarn, cast on 30 stitches; for 15-inch pieces, cast on 45 stitches; and for 20-inch pieces, cast on 60 stitches. Knit all pieces in garter stitch.
  2. 2. Cast off when you reach the lengths indicated on the diagram. Weave in ends.
  3. 3. Following the diagram, sew pieces together with the merino yarn, using a loose mattress stitch: With pieces aligned, insert threaded yarn needle through next-to-last stitched hole in one piece, then go behind two horizontal bars and back up to the front. Insert needle in same position on other piece, again going behind two bars and back up again. Continue sewing from one piece to the next in this manner until next-to-last hole on other side is reached.
  4. 4. Optional: Crochet around edge of blanket with a single crochet (see pageĀ 380 for instructions).
