How TO
THROW A COCKTAIL PARTY

Entertaining on a budget? Prefer to snack as you sip and chat? Then skip the seated dinner and have a drink-focused fete instead.

plan the drinks

There’s no right or wrong way to serve drinks, so choose a method that suits the occasion.

Self-serve bar: For a casual gathering, a reasonably priced selection of spirits and mixers (see page 240) set on a table or counter will allow guests to serve themselves.

signature drinks: Consider mixing one of your own favorites or something that’s a bit unexpected, so guests can experience a new drink. Then send everyone home with the recipe.

big-batch cocktails: Rather than mixing individual drinks, prepare multiple servings in pitchers, carafes, or punch bowls ahead of time. Sangria and margaritas are just the beginning. Hold off on adding ice until the party gets going.

nonalcoholic options: No matter which way you go with the cocktails, always make sure to have ample nonalcoholic refreshers on hand, too, both for mixing and sipping. Choose among flavored seltzers, small-batch sodas, sparkling water, lemonade, and fresh fruit juices—or create a signature mocktail.

Tip

For double-duty drinks, prepare nonalcoholic punches for all to enjoy, setting out a bottle or two of liquor so any of your guests can spike their own beverages.
