Dear Chicken Soup,
Today I bought Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II. I am already on page twenty, and I can’t put the book down!
I recently watched a boy a few years older than me die on the side of the road because he and his friends had been drinking and took a turn at ninety miles per hour and crashed into another car. I was the first one at the scene and called 911. My boyfriend and I were going home after Homecoming, an unforgettable night. We were just talking and laughing when we both saw the crash. I heard screeching and screaming. We drove up to where the cars had hit, and I got out of the car. While I was dialing 911, I looked down and realized I was standing barefoot in glass and gasoline. My boyfriend went to the cars to see if everyone was all right. In the car that got hit by the teenagers were three older ladies. They were all okay at the time. But, unfortunately, one of the ladies died about a week after the accident.
The boys in the other car were both unconscious. I stood there watching paramedics try to keep the driver of the car alive. Ten minutes later they put a body bag over him. I will never forget the boy who died or the blood and glass everywhere and the bottle of alcohol the police took out of the car.
To this day I will never let any of my friends drive drunk or drive with someone who has been drinking. I do not want to lose someone I love. Watching that boy die made me realize how easily life can be taken away. This really proved to me how stupid drinking is.
I just wanted to tell you my experience and how reading your book really helped me think about the whole situation. I hope I can share it with others.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Young
