“Peaches?” Zoe asked, adjusting her glasses and adding the word to her notes. She was researching the word in connection with the others: Texas, hill, B and now peaches.
“Mom’s parents had a place in Bearson, Texas,” Trevor said. “It was on a hill on a huge spread of land.”
“What about peaches?” Ethan asked.
“They had peach trees in the backyard,” Trevor said.
“Do you think Matthew would have buried Mom at her parents’ place?” Sam asked.
Annabel didn’t know what to make of the clues. Matthew could be jerking them around and leading them nowhere. Why would he do something almost nice for the woman he’d murdered? Annabel leaned against Jesse, happy to have him close, needing his support and love.
“We could visit the house,” Ridge said.
“The property belongs to us, and it wouldn’t hurt to visit,” Sam said.
Except it did hurt. Emotionally, none of them wanted to face that lost part of their past. They had each visited the Bearson house a few times, but it seemed to leave a press of sadness on them when they went. They didn’t stay long. “Maybe if we dig around the peach trees, we’ll find Mom,” Annabel said.
“Or we could dig up the entire property,” Sam said. “How do we know which peach tree?”
“The original investigation into Mom’s disappearance included cadaver dogs,” Ridge said. “No remains were found.”
Annabel didn’t have answers, but she knew they’d need more clues. The amount of resources it would require to dig up the entire Bearson property looking for their mother would be extensive and take too much time. They couldn’t accomplish it fast enough to save Chris and Trevor from visiting Matthew.
If they wanted closure on the past, they’d each have to visit with their serial-killer father. At least, come what may, Jesse would be at her side. Annabel had found love in the most unexpected place, and she would fight to keep it.
