I acknowledge the sacred land of the Lkwungen People, also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, upon which this book was written. The southern tip of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the San Juan Islands are the traditional territories of the Lkwungen peoples. Lkwungen means “Place to smoke herring,” and Lkwungen’athun refers to the language of the land.
