Earlier versions of chapters 4 and 5 were included in Palgrave Handbook of Critical Theory, ed. Michael J. Thompson (London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), and in Kafka’s The Trial: Philosophical Perspectives, ed. Espen Hammer (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018), respectively. Prior versions of chapters 6 and 7 were published in the journal MLN (Johns Hopkins University Press), as was an earlier and shorter version of chapter 3 that appeared in German. It is published here in English for the first time, adroitly translated by Kristina Mendicino. The index was prepared by Karen Embry.
