The command to “encourage” others is found throughout the Bible. In 5:11-23, Paul gives many specific examples of how we can encourage others.
Example: Build each other up.
Suggested Application: Point out to someone a quality you appreciate in him or her.
Example: Honor leaders.
Suggested Application: Look for ways to cooperate.
Example: Show leaders great respect.
Suggested Application: Hold back your next critical comments about those in positions of responsibility. Say “thank you” to your leaders for their efforts.
Example: Live in peace.
Suggested Application: Search for ways to get along with others.
Example: Warn the lazy.
Suggested Application: Challenge someone to join you in a project.
Example: Encourage the timid.
Suggested Application: Encourage those who are timid by reminding them of God’s promises.
Example: Help the weak.
Suggested Application: Support those who are weak by loving them and praying for them.
Example: Be patient.
Suggested Application: Think of a situation that tries your patience, and plan ahead of time how you can stay calm.
Example: Resist revenge.
Suggested Application: Instead of planning to get even with those who mistreat you, do good to them.
Example: Be joyful.
Suggested Application: Remember that even in the midst of turmoil, God is in control.
Example: Pray continually.
Suggested Application: God is always with you—talk to him.
Example: Give thanks.
Suggested Application: Make a list of all the gifts God has given you, giving thanks to God for each one.
Example: Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.
Suggested Application: Cooperate with the Spirit the next time he prompts you to participate in a Christian meeting.
Example: Do not scoff at prophecies.
Suggested Application: Receive God’s word from those who speak for him.
Example: Avoid every kind of evil.
Suggested Application: Avoid situations where you will be drawn into temptation.
Example: Count on God’s constant help.
Suggested Application: Realize that the Christian life is to be lived not in our own strength but through God’s power.
