Exodus 20:1

Hebrew law served as the personal and national guide for living under God’s authority. It directed the moral, spiritual, and social life. Its purpose was to produce better understanding of God and greater commitment to him.

Torah (Exodus 24:12; Isaiah 13:3)

Meaning: Direction, Guidance, Instruction

Significance: Need for law in general; a command from a higher person to a lower

Mitswah (Genesis 26:5; Exodus 15:26; 20:2-17)

Meaning: Commandment, Command

Significance: God’s specific instruction to be obeyed rather than a general law; used of the Ten Commandments

Mishpat (Genesis 18:19; Deuteronomy 16:18; 17:9)

Meaning: Orders, Precepts

Significance: Used often in the Psalms to describe God’s orders and assignments

Dabar (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13)

Meaning: Word

Significance: Used to indicate divine oracles or revelations of God

Dath (Ezekiel 7:26; Daniel 6:8, 12)

Meaning: Royal Edict, Public Law

Significance: Refers to the divine law or Jewish religious traditions in general
