1  The match was won by New Zealand 39–3 in October 1915. As there was no rugby ball on the island, a soccer ball was used. There were no goalposts, so no conversion attempts. The New Zealand referee Sid Paul was later killed at Passchendaele. Richards wrote in The Sydney Mail that with New Zealand boasting several representative players, Australia were always going to struggle, but ‘put up a valiant defence’. The Lemnos playing field — situated on the beach at low tide — left a lot to be desired, and ‘the odour of decaying marine matter made the grounds obnoxious to many’. NSW’s Stuart Spratt was believed to have played in the game. The Poverty Bay Herald reported ‘the Australian team was weak and lacked combination’.
