5  NSW renamed its first grade premiership after a rugby serviceman whose life ended tragically. Robert Shute, an 8th Field Artillery Brigade gunner, played in a 1922 NSW trial match at Manly Oval. When tackled by Jack Shute — no relation — he fell heavily on his head. The following morning he died from a cerebral haemorrhage. From 1923, Sydney clubs have vied for the Shute Shield.
