Something Fishy

Words to Treasure

“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

Exodus 20:12

Sheila sat on a rock staring down at the huge fish trying to swim up the river. Salmon were heading upstream to lay their eggs. Her friend James and his people had been fishing this river for thousands of years. James’ uncle walked by with a huge forty-pound fish in his hands. He smiled at them, “This one is for tonight. Sheila, you staying for dinner?”

She nodded, “Yes please. We just buy our fish at the store.”

James leaned on her shoulder. “We like it old school like how our ancestors did it. Except Uncle Jack buys his BBQ sauce from the store. Ssssh, don’t tell anyone. He claims his sauce is an ancient family secret.”

In Jesus’ time, people had been fishing for thousands of years just like James’ family. It was a tradition passed on from family to family. Do you have some family traditions? Ask your parents how they started? One tradition that’s been handed down generation after generation is telling Bible stories and sharing God’s truth. Will you help pass it on?

In Jesus’ time, the place to fish was the Sea of Galilee. Funny enough, the Sea of Galilee is actually the largest freshwater lake in Israel. There were over twenty different types of fish in the lake. Would you like your fish roasted or pan-fried?
