Words to Treasure
He gives you crops in their seasons. He provides you with plenty of food.
Acts 14:17
Douglas was eating a ham sandwich just the way he liked it when Patty sat down beside him. She opened her tub of pasta, but she didn’t look very happy. “How can you eat meat? You’re eating a poor defenseless animal. Pigs are very smart, you know.” She looked down her glasses at him. “I’m a vegetarian. I don’t eat dead animals.”
Douglas took a bite of ham and smiled, “How nice for you. If you’re trying to make me feel guilty, it’s not working.” He talked with his mouth full, “I love meat.”
Ask people what the Bible says about whether we should eat only vegetables, and they’ll all have a different answer. It is one of those gray areas where it appears God has left it up to us to decide what is best. The important thing to know is he has provided you with a world that is designed to give your body all the things it needs to stay strong and healthy. So whether you grab a burger or a carrot stick, the bottom line is to respect other people’s choices, and they will respect yours.
In ancient times, fruit and vegetables were eaten fresh, cooked, or often dried so they could be stored for later use. Meat was eaten, but certainly not as much meat as we eat today. People ate fish, goat, lamb, beef, and birds.
