Words to Treasure
Speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. Speak up for the rights of all those who are poor.
Proverbs 31: 8
It was midnight. In the garden, the guys were pulling up plants and joking around and having a good time. Suddenly the garden was flooded with light. The vandals blinked as dozens of flashlight beams completely surrounded them. They had no place to go and no place to hide. They had been caught in the act of garden destruction. A figure stepped out of the light. “Smile!” Joey took a couple of photographs and gave a little wave. “How about a group shot?” The guys didn’t know what to do or say. Suddenly a police car pulled up with lights flashing. Now the guys had a lot of explaining to do to everyone.
Heroes stand up for what’s right. They fight all kinds of wrongs — big ones and little ones. That doesn’t have to mean physical beat-’emups. Usually, it means finding peaceful ways to help others and stopping evil from happening.
In Bible times, many leaders were greedy and made their people pay more taxes than they could afford. Some moms and dads had to sell their children into slavery to pay their debts. This was happening in Jerusalem but, our hero Nehemiah stood up to those bad leaders and made them promise to stop. They did. It helped that Nehemiah had God and powerful King Artaxerxes on his side.
